6-Step Lawn Care Program

The Greenskeeper, Inc. offers a six step seasonal lawn care program that is specifically designed to meet the needs of lawns in Indiana. These timely applications vary in content to continually build the health, color, and vitality of your lawn. These applications are made by fully certified and state licensed Turf Specialists.

Early Spring: This application starts the year with a fertilizer containing pre-emergent crabgrass control. Crabgrass and Foxtail control is applied at the highest rate possible and the product used is widely accepted as one of the top one or two available to the professional lawn care industry. NOTE: We also double treat any boulevard areas along the street which are always more susceptible to crabgrass breakthrough. At the same time, we adjust the make-up of our fertilization so as not to encourage excess top growth.

Late Spring: As the weather warms-up, broadleaf weeds begin to germinate and grow in the lawn. Once this process has started, we shift our attention to their control. Probably the biggest thing that sets our broadleaf weed control applications apart from our competition is that we blend different herbicides together in order to get better control of a wider variety of weeds including dandelion, chickweed, and white clover. Special emphasis is placed on treating the borders of the lawn where such weeds are more prevalent.

Early Summer: Surface insects such as Sod Webworm, Cinch bug and Billbug invade the landscape at this time of year and damage lawns by eating the leaf blade. Therefore, this application includes an insecticide to combat these surface feeding insects. Broadleaf weed control and early summer fertilization is also included at this time. We also include iron in this and other applications. A valuable micronutrient, iron is added to strengthen the root system and permit the plant to hold leaf color longer.

Late Summer: The latter half of summer is generally one of the most stressful periods for any growing plant. Central Indiana is in a "transitional weather zone" which produces a wide variance of heat, humidity, and rainfall in both July and August. During this period we concentrate our efforts on providing the lawns root system with a very slow release fertilization designed to sustain it during what often are radically changing growing conditions.

Fall: This is the season of the year when all growing plants go through their last sustained growth period. It is an excellent time to control hot weather weeds that may have germinated over the summer and to slowly begin preparing the lawn for colder weather. Our blend of slow release fertilizers and weed control herbicides are specifically designed to take advantage of such growing conditions.

Dormant Fertilization: As lawns slow their upward growth and lose color; the plant continues to grow downward for an extended period. During this time, a high rate of Nitrogen is applied that will almost all go towards enhancing the root development of the plant, provide it with food reserves for winter, and promote earlier green-up next spring.

White Grub Control

White Grub Infestation is a very common problem in the cool season grasses found in central Indiana. The Greenskeeper will always include a price for White Grub Control in all our estimates.

White Grubs are the larva of two types of beetles, the Northern Masked Chaffer or the Japanese Beetle. In late June, the female of these beetles, lays eggs by burrowing into the thatch layer of a lawn so that the eggs are deposited in the root zone of the grass.

In approximately 30 days, these eggs hatch and the larva produced, begins feeding on the root system. Damage can be severe for two reasons. First, the root is actually cut away from the soil leaving the grass plant to slowly die.

Secondly, because the insect is feeding in the root zone, it cannot be seen by the naked eye and thus the damage it causes won't be discovered until after it has occurred.

White Grub infestation is treated in one of two ways.

1. There are preventative controls which can be applied in June and July of each year. These products are then absorbed into the grass plant. If, at some later date in the year, the White Grub attacks the plant, the insecticide kills the White Grub.

2. If, in late August or September, grub damage is discovered; the lawn can be treated on a curative basis with insecticides that actually kill the grub by being absorbed thru its' skin, or being eaten by the insect. In both cases, the insecticide must be watered in after application in order to be effective.

Is your lawn susceptible to White Grub damage?

Here is where we tend to find White Grubs.

1. Older lawns that are sodded rather than seeded.
2. Lawns with a thatch layer of more than 1/2 inch.
3. Irrigated lawns.
4. Lawns with outdoor lighting systems which attract insects.

Perimeter Insect Control

"Occational Invaders" are a relatively broad group of insects which live outdoors, but which may invade buildings at some point in their life cycle. Although they usually do not cause structural damage or pose a health threat to the public, they are considered nuisances and, therefore, must be controlled.

The periodic treatment of planting beds and surrounding turf for the control of such insects, is a process known as Perimeter Insect Control.

What Is Perimeter Insecticide Control?
Perimeter Insecticide Control is a liquid application of insecticide to a "band" six to ten feet around your home. This is an area where crawling insects are generally most active. The purpose of the application is to discourage their activity and repel them from entering the building.

The Greenskeeper Perimeter Insecticide Program is on a spring, summer, and fall application schedule that you can begin at any time.

How can you help control insects inside your home?
1. Check caulking around exterior including window casings.
2. Place exterior lighting as far from the structure as possible.
3. Keep garbage cans tightly covered.
4. Avoid stacking firewood on the ground near the structure.
5. Check sealing of entry points including those around plumbing, electrical wiring, etc.
6. Make certain all soffits and wall vents are properly screened.
7. Be certain that all ground level doors seal properly.
